Adherence to dress codes is so Euro-Chic.
I’m at crossroads… a trivial, silly, definitely of no importance crossroads, but a crossroads all the same. The tickets are booked, the plans are made, the Excel document is drafted (my mom is allll about the organization), so do I or don’t I… give my dad a dress code for Europe.
My worry is that my dad will come across the big pond with his denim shorts and baseball caps, and probably wear his tube socks with his running shoes and essentially be the epitome of tourist that I spend most of my days currently ringing my bike bell at angrily at cross walks. Firstly, let me make it clear that I am not embarrassed of my dad’s fashion sense… that is, I’m not within the continental US. Because in the continental US, jeans are the norm and nobody bats an eye at a pair of white Nike’s with a button up shirt. Even me, being through and through a typical American fashion wise, would have to do a double take if I ever saw that in Denmark. I have found it difficult to recall if my dad actually owns dark washed denim. Or fully button up shirts. Or … a hat that isn’t doesn’t have a football team’s emblem on it.
My mom? She’s fine. She’ll probably be a little taken off guard with the typical flowing laces and pastel scarves with tailored wool coats here, and the sight of women in heels on their beach cruisers with babies in the back, but she’ll blend in well enough. Most likely, so will my dad. I’m still seriously considering, for the sake of “just in case”, delicately tell my parents to leave the light wash denim at home and maybe dig up some scarves and tailored jackets. Do those even exist in Arizona?
The days get warmer and warmer and I’m biking in little more than a leather jacket and some gloves, and shoes without wool socks (this is fantastic, because now I can move my toes!), so I’m looking forward to showing my parents around the city when the sun is shining. I did realize that their flight gets in at 7 35am, and as I cannot actually remember the last time I got up before 9, something tells me I’ll be cursing the world and non-domestic flight plans the morning of April 18th.
Regardless, the prospect of everything is raaather exciting, but crunch time is definitely coming up, since I haven’t got much time before I leave for Italy, and then have a slam packed month of April with little room to breathe, much less write papers and prepare for oral examinations for class. I spent today spending 400kr on a hair cut (on that note: AHHHHHHHHHH!) and catching up on old episodes of The Office required reading, and have a coffee date with a friend tomorrow, so time is a-wastin’. I feel like I’ve pursued a double major in college – one in Family Dynamics, the other in bachelor’s in Procrastination. I’m an honors student in the latter.
So… this week will be all about time management, and roll on the weekend! I could use another night to appreciate Danish nightlife. Maybe even bust out some heels?
